The Eyre Peninsula Advocate was founded in 2021 in the absence of a local newspaper presence on the Eyre Peninsula.

Serving a region rich in agricultural and aquaculture production, its wheat and grain growing industries, as well as seafood sector, are famous well past the triangular peninsula. The region is also known for its mining, plus pristine beaches and natural attractions.

The main townships include Port Lincoln in the south, Whyalla in the north east and Ceduna in the north west, with tight-knit communities dotted throughout the region.

Circulating throughout Eyre Peninsula, the newspaper has helped to fill a void caused by the closures of the West Coast Sentinel and Eyre Peninsula Tribune newspapers in 2020.

THE HISTORY

The closure of newspapers based in Ceduna and Cleve during the COVID-19 pandemic left upper Eyre Peninsula towns without a voice.

Prompted by the District Council of Cleve, parent company Papers & Publications, which is based in Balaklava in the state's Mid North and publishes the Plains Producer each Wednesday and the Two Wells Echo monthly, created the new publication, which launched in September 2021.

“We were asked by the District Council of Cleve to bring a paper back to the region after the EP Tribune and the West Coast Sentinel closed,” managing director Andrew Manuel said when the newspaper launched.

“Regional newspapers are so important to people living in the country.”

The name of the newspaper has connections to sister paper the Plains Producer, which was founded in 1903 as the Central Advocate.

It covers news, community events and sport from across the region.

The Eyre Peninsula Advocate is available weekly on Thursdays in towns throughout the region, as well as Adelaide, Coober Pedy, Roxby Downs, Port Augusta, Quorn and Port Pirie.
