The Monitor has served the Roxby Downs township and wider Far North region since 2003. It is community owned and operated and is the only local newspaper in the area. The Monitor is delivered FREE to homes and businesses in Roxby Downs, Olympic Dam, Andamooka and Woomera. Other outback distribution points include Port Augusta, Coober Pedy, Leigh Creek, Pimba, William Creek, Oodnadatta, Glendambo, Laura, Arkaroola, Marree and Carrieton. Based in Roxby Downs, The Monitor is primarily focused on news regarding the local community and nearby BHP Billiton Olympic Dam mine site.
Roxby Downs is located around 560km north west of Adelaide in the Far North region of South Australia. The town was established to accommodate workers at the BHP Billiton Olympic Dam mine site, which was officially opened in November 1988.
The Monitor printed its first edition in 2003 and has since grown to be an important source of news for Roxby Downs residents.
The newspaper also covers issues relating to nearby Far North communities including Andamooka, Woomera and towns along the Oodnadatta Track.
It started as a fortnightly publication owned by Roxby Council but is now an independent weekly newspaper delivered free to local homes and businesses. Copies also distributed to other locations throughout the Far North region including William Creek, Oodnadatta, Marree and Leigh Creek.
The Monitor is a community owned and operated initiative aimed at improving regional communication between the community, industry, small business and local government.
